angola chapel
angola, louisiana

Latitude Architects participated in pro-bono design work for a chapel and event center complex for the Angola Prison, part of the Louisiana State Penitentiary System. We worked on the schematic design for this project with Samaritan’s Purse, a non-profit international relief and community development organization. Today, the Angola Prison continues to be a working plantation. This complex is designed to be built primarily of masonry and conventional framing which allows the inmates the ability to build the complex themselves. At the center of the facility is a masonry “spine” that houses supporting functions and anchors the building. The narrow ends of the chapel and event center are predominantly glass allowing views into the plantation fields and filling the interior space with light. A bell tower completes the structure and gives presence throughout the prison grounds.
